How to Make Poison Candy Apples
- You will require 6-8 apples for this recipe. The best part is that you can use either red or green apples of any variety, making it easy to find the best apples that suit your taste.
- To create these Poison Candy Apples, you require 6-8 Popsicle sticks or lollipop sticks. Either work well, so whatever you have on hand should be just fine.
- Before starting with your candy apples, you will want to make sure that you properly wash and dry them. It is important to ensure you remove any build up before you use them.
- In order to make these Poison Candy Apples you will require a cookie sheet and parchment or wax paper. The paper liner will help to reduce the mess, keeping your tray free of sticky, hard to remove candy.
- Prior to cooking your candy-coating mixture, make sure to have another saucepan ready to transfer half of the mixture into when it’s reached hard crack stage. This is when you will add in the food coloring to create different colors.
- You don’t require a candy thermometer for this recipe, but it is recommended to reach the proper stage when creating the candy coating. If you have a thermometer, bring the mixture to 300 degrees. If you are without a thermometer, place a small bowl of cold water beside your cooking station, after approximately 10 minutes, take a small spoon full of the boiling mixture and drop it into the water. If the candy hardens right away, that means it is ready. This is called hard crack stage and is the perfect temperature for candy apples.
- Separate the mixture and add in your food coloring. We like to use one with red and one with black to create a spooky effect, but you could use any color you desire.
- Dip each apple into the mixture and give it a swirl to coat them, then place them on the cookie tray and allow them to cool and set.
- You can decorate these apples any way you desire.

Equipment
Ingredients
- 6-8 red or green apples any variety
- 3 cups white sugar
- ½ cup light corn syrup
- 1 cup water
- ½ teaspoon red food coloring
- ½ teaspoon black food coloring
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon oil or flavoring
Instructions
- Wash and dry the apples and place sticks into them and set aside.
- Prepare the cookie sheet with parchment or wax paper. Spray with oil lightly.
- Using a medium sauce pan place the sugar, corn syrup, water and cinnamon at medium heat.
- Bring to a rolling boil until crack stage is reached. 300 degrees (I always let mine go 10 degrees higher it helps the candy have a crisp snap). If you don't have a candy thermometer use a cup or small glass filled halfway with water. Once candy cooks for approx. 10 min use a spoon. Dip into the mixture and let some drop into the water. If the candy hardens immediately it is at crack stage.
- When candy is ready, separate half into another saucepan. Add one color of food coloring to each saucepan.
- Dip each apple into candy and swirl.
- Set onto cookie sheet and allow to cool.
- Decorate and enjoy!
